Post-reconstruction era disenfranchisement laws continue to hinder political participation in 2017, excluding millions of Americans from our democratic process by stripping voting rights from those with criminal convictions.
This practice varies widely across the 50 states, rendering the contours of the fundamental right of citizens to vote elastic, inconsistent, and uncertain. Some states impose a forever punishment, even on those who have served their time, while other states never disenfranchise their citizens. There are also a range of policies requiring past offenders to satisfy financial debts before voting--which, given the racial and economic disparities among former incarcerates, is difficult to distinguish from a poll tax.
This CLE will explore US criminal disenfranchisement policy and the laws that perpetuate it, along with its origins, and the future of rights restoration. We hope you will join us for this important presentation.
