2016 is shaping up to be a very active year for NYDLC's Legislative Affairs Committee and for voting rights advocacy across New York State and America. With renewed focus from Governor Cuomo, 2016 budget proposals include finally bringing Early Vote to New York (a goal NYDLC has pursued for several years) and potentially revolutionizing the way we register voters by enacting a system of automatic voter registration, at least for drivers.
Beyond these priorities, NYDLC continues to advocate for convenient pro-voter reforms like same-day registration, simplified ballot design, registration portability, online registration, pre-registration for the next generation of voters, and more.
Nationally, we are proud that our Democratic presidential candidates have called for pro-voter election reforms. Now that our issues have their attention, we need to have their back, and we need to keep them focused on strengthening voting rights beyond November 2016. To do so, NYDLC will be rolling out a 2016 National Voting Rights and Political Participation Platform in the coming months, identifying several top priorities that, if adopted nationwide, would enhance our democracy by making our electoral process fairer, more inclusive, and more accessible to the 50+ million eligible voters who are not currently registered to vote.
But these are big priorities, and we can't achieve them without your relentless dedication, active participation, and continued support. RSVP today and join us!
